Autograph letter from Earl Beauchamp to Henry Lawson dated 16th January, 1916.

The letter concerns Lawson’s dedication of My Army, O, My Army! and Other Songs (1915) to Beauchamp. Earl Beauchamp became the Governor of New South Wales in 1899 at the age of twenty-six. He helped Lawson move to England in 1900.

Madresfield Court is located next to the village of Madresfield in Worcestershire (about 100 miles west of London). It is the ancestral home of the Lygon family (spelled Ligon in America) who became Earls Beauchamp {1} (pronounced “Beecham”) {2}, who are the ancestors of the De Bracys, from near Domesday (1086) down to the present time. The Ligon (Lygon) family came from Normandy to England with William the Conqueror (1066). The Lygons go back to the time of the Norman Conquest, and when Madresfield was possessed by the De Bracys. Madresfield Court passed to the Lygon family from the De Bracy family when Joan, only daughter of William and Isabel Bracy, married Thomas Lygon before 1423. They had tho sons, William and Thomas Lygon. In 1450, Isabel Bracy made a demise to her grandson William Lygon the manor of Madresfield. The earliest patriarch of the family was George Lygon and is the first of the family in the pedigree given by the Lygons to the Heralds. George Lygon was succeeded by his son Richard Lygon. Richard is the first mentioned Lygon in Madresfield Muniments around 1400. Richard Lygon was succeeded by his son Thomas Lygon whose first mention is in 1414 and 1416, when he is commissioner of the King (Henry VI) for Worcester. This is the earliest known history of the Leagans Family.

Parished: Madresfield @ british-history.ac.uk:

MADRESFIELD is not mentioned in the Domesday Survey, and was in 1086 part of Powick, a large manor held of the abbey of Westminster by various holders, of whom the chief was Urse the Sheriff, (fn. 19) I virgate and 2 carucates of his estate being at Madresfield. (fn. 20) His descendant William Beauchamp, in the time of Stephen, held of the abbey a hide in Madresfield pertaining to his holding in Powick. (fn. 21) Madresfield formed part of seven fees in Worcestershire which were returned as abbey lands in the 13th century, (fn. 22) and the Beauchamps of Elmley continued to hold of the Abbots of Westminster until the 15th century. (fn. 23)

The interest of William Beauchamp passed to his descendants the Earls of Warwick, the manor being held of the honour of Elmley Castle (fn. 24) until the end of the 17th century. (fn. 25)

Madresfield was probably held by the Bracys as early as the time of Henry I, for William Bracy in 1166 held half a knight’s fee in Worcestershire of William Beauchamp of the ancient feoffment from the time of Henry I. (fn. 26)
